Detoxification

Treatment

Detoxing might seem like a passing trend, given that every other ad on Insta seems to promote a brand new detox method (with emojis for days). But, it is actually an important concept—and it’s not going anywhere! Trouble is, approaches to detoxing are all over the map, which makes the whole enterprise a bit controversial. So, here’s the deal: your body can detoxify naturally (lots of organs help clear out unwanted substances, including the liver, kidneys, GI system, lungs, and skin—bet you didn’t know skin is an organ!). But that ability can be compromised. If you’re fighting off chronic infection or managing persistent pain, it’s possible that your body isn’t detoxing as efficiently as usual. There are countless detoxification methods to choose from, including holistic and conventional approaches. Core aspects of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine are based on detoxification, and it’s a key part of many holistic and medicinal treatments and supplements. Common detox methods include eating high-fiber fruits and vegetables, using vitamins and herbal supplements (especially ones like dandelion root that promote the excretion of bile) or chelation agents (citrus pectin is a natural one!), hitting the sauna, or fasting. Whether you’re managing the symptoms of a chronic illness or eliminating toxins that have built up over time, short-term detoxing, preferably with the help of a nutritionist or other practitioner, may help set your body up for success.

Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness

Millions of people are suffering from chronic illnesses that, unbeknownst to them, are the result of exposure to environmental toxins and infectious agents such as mold and Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease. Millions. Because the symptoms of these illnesses are so varied and unusual, many of these individuals have sought medical care only to be dismissed, as if what they are experiencing is “in their head.” Many (if not most) have tried to tough it out and continue to function without hope of improvement. Unfortunately, their illnesses are very real. Toxic is a book of hope for these individuals, their loved ones, and the physicians who provide their care. Over many years of helping thousands of patients recover their health (even after their previous doctors had given up on them), Dr. Neil Nathan has come to understand some of the most common causes for these debilitating illnesses, which allows for the utilization of more precise and effective forms of treatment. The goal of this book is to shed light on these complex illnesses so that suffering patients and their families can get the help they so desperately need. Inside, you will find: • Information about how extreme sensitivity and toxicity develop in the body, how sensitivity and toxicity differ, and how they often overlap. • Detailed descriptions of each of the five major causes of extreme sensitivity and toxicity: mold, Bartonella (a co-infection of Lyme disease), mast cell activation, porphyria, and carbon monoxide poisoning. • An outline of the cell danger response, a revolutionary model developed by Dr. Robert Naviaux that explains how the body essentially gets “stuck” fighting a threat even after the danger has passed. • A system-by-system plan for “rebooting” the body to break the cycle of illness and allow healing to begin. • Information about coping with stress and embracing an emotional and/or spiritual awakening on the path to wellness.

Natural MD Radio: Herbs for Detoxification - What Really Works

Detoxification is something our bodies do naturally. Unfortunately, things are much different for us now than they were for our ancestors. While they were exposed to very few environmental toxins as little as 75 years ago, the same cannot be said for us today. We are simultaneously being overloaded by external toxins and undersupported by our diets because our diets are not balanced enough to keep our natural detox processes robust. Over the past few weeks of our series on detoxification, we have talked about the impact that too much detoxification can have on your health, as well as the differences between metabolic and psychologic detoxification and the dangers of fad detoxes. I want to wrap up this series discussing the very powerful role that some foods and supplements can play in our body's natural detoxification processes. I also want to share some of my favorite botanicals and herbs that I use with my patients to support their natural detoxification processes. Today I'm excited to dive into the steps of a 12-week detox program. Along the way, I'll share with you some of my absolute favorite botanicals and herbs to use to support the detoxification process while also showing you how to be intentional about limiting exposures to harmful toxins in your home, food, and household products. Listen in as I talk about the historical and scientific support behind these detoxifying herbs and the steps you can take to rid your home and your body of the harmful toxins that are getting in the way of your health.
